King, who played 268 times during an injury hit 13-year spell with the club, will lead a Spurs All-Star XI against the current side at White Hart Lane on Monday, May 12.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, King, a one-club man who was capped 21 times by England, kept mum over the make-up of his star-studded side.

"I am very excited by this announcement," he said. "It gives me a chance to get out on the great White Hart Lane pitch again to say thank you to the fans one more time for the support they gave me during my time here.

"My team will be made up of players who I have played with during my time at Tottenham, players who helped me to reach the levels that I did, some real legends of the club who will be coming back and gracing the day.

"It will be a great occasion for everyone as I have some real great faces, great characters taking on the current first team."

On the injuries which curtailed the 33-year-old's career, he said: "As a footballer you want to play as many games as possible and injuries are the most difficult part of the game to deal with.

"I tried to play as many games as I could, including many where I was nowhere near match fitness, but I gave it my all in every one of them.

"Obviously I would have loved to have played more but I'm thankful for what I did have throughout my career here."

And King took time to praise the efforts of current boss Tim Sherwood, despite continued speculation over his future with the club.

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal has been linked with the job but King believes Sherwood still commands the support of the fans and the players.

"Tim is working as hard as he can," he said. "He is a young manager and I have a lot of confidence in him.

"I have seen him work with the Under-21s and he has done great work with them, not just him but Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey too.

"He is a confident manager and from now until the end of the season what his focus will be is winning as many games as possible.

"That is what the club will demand and that is what he will demand from the players, which is all he can do for now.

"He was a passionate player, he's a passionate manager and I think the fans always like to see that."

ven if United were to sign CR7 & Messi to play upfront, the fact remains Fletcher and Cleverly are playing in midfield. That's where the problem is. Fletcher is too slow with an awful pass, while Cleverly is simply rubbish
