Bentaleb burst onto the scene last season after then manager Tim Sherwood promoted him into the first-team and he impressed for Spurs.

The 19-year-old's club form saw him earn a call-up to the Algeria squad for this summer's World Cup finals and he has vowed to carry on his rise to prominence this season.

"One or two tried to say I was only in the team because Tim Sherwood knew me from the youth teams," Bentaleb told The Sun.

"If people think I am still that little kid, then that's up to them.

"But I have been to the World Cup and I am looking forward to improving even more at Tottenham under the new manager.

"This time last year I could never have dreamt I would go to the World Cup.

"My aim back then was just to try to get near the first team at Tottenham. But once you achieve one goal, you set yourself a new one - and everything I set myself last season I achieved. And more.

"Now I want to keep improving at Tottenham and be a regular starter."

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.

Hmmm. We're not sure about this argument - one Mailbox says Luis Suarez is easier to forgive because he is a little loco. We also have mails on Studge and more...
