Roberto Martinez: Says manager must be m

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez believes Fabio Capello was undermined by the Football Association in the events which led to his resignation as England manager.

The Italian stepped down on Wednesday following discussions with the FA centering on their decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy.

Capello was unhappy with them going over his head and rid Terry of the armband following his alleged racial abuse of QPR's Anton Ferdinand, with the Chelsea defender to stand trial just days after this summer's European Championship. Terry has always denied the allegations.

Martinez has backed the Italian, insisting all main decisions involving players should ultimately come down to the manager.

"In any football team, it doesn't matter if it's at club level or a national team, the manager is the main man and the one that needs to put everything together," said Martinez in a press conference on Sky Sports News.

"For that, every single decision that affects players, no one can do it apart from the manager and I think that's something that's always been the case.

"Only in successful teams you'll find that those should be the dynamics of any group.

"It is disappointing, the manner that it happened, but I'm sure that that could change the future of the way that things have been working."

Speculation over who will succeed Capello is in full flow, with Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp a clear frontrunner for the role.

Martinez believes Redknapp has the qualities needed to flourish as a national team boss.

"Harry Redknapp is a special manager, a special man," he said. "If you want to speak about the figure of Harry Redknapp, he's got an unbelievable track record.

"He's someone that has taken Spurs to a different level and the way that he's achieving that is with his easy man management that he's got.

"He gets the best out of everyone which is a great quality to have for a national team coach. Obviously only time will tell."
