Joel Campbell: Looking for first team ou
Teenage Costa Rica frontman Joel Campbell is determined to show Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger he does not need to buy any more strikers to bolster the squad next season.
Campbell, 19, joined the Gunners from Deportivo Saprissa last August, but was farmed out to Ligue 1 outfit Lorient to gain first-team experience.
Wenger has already moved to bring in £11million Germany striker Lukas Podolski from Cologne, whom it is hoped will provide back-up for captain Robin van Persie, the Holland striker yet to commit his long-term future to the club.
Campbell believes he has what it takes to break into the squad, much as midfielder Francis Coquelin did following his loan spell in France.
"That's what I'm hoping for - to play for Arsenal next year. I think I've got the ability to do it. I've got every confidence in my ability to go to Arsenal and play," Campbell told Arsenal Player.
"I have learned how to live with other people in a different country to mine, to be here living life outside football, to learn about the training and the intensity of the game in Ligue 1.
"That's all helped me to learn things so I can continue my football career with Arsenal, and I hope that's going to happen."
Campbell feels he has what it takes to make it in the English top flight.
"I think I can bring a lot of things to the Arsenal attack - I can contribute goals and assists," he said.
"I want people to see what I can do. I always think big, so I want to go to Arsenal and play as many games as possible.
"I have to give everything I've got, train hard and have faith in my abilities, to never doubt them and keep moving forward."
Van Persie - whose 30 Premier League goals drove the Gunners into third place - has joined up with the Holland squad ahead of Euro 2012, with no firm news over whether he will agree a contract extension, be sold in the summer or simply allow his current deal to run down next season.
Former skipper Cesc Fabregas, who left last summer to return to Barcelona, hopes his old team-mate stays with Arsenal to help end their trophy drought.
Spain international Fabregas told reporters: "As an Arsenal fan I would be happy if he stayed in London to help Arsenal win titles."
The Gunners will have several first-team players at the European Championships.
Czech Republic captain Tomas Rosicky is, though, facing a battle to be fit from a calf problem which has forced him out of the friendly with Israel.
