Jonas Olsson: New deal done

West Brom have handed in-form defender Jonas Olsson a new four-year contract.

The Sweden international has been a key member of the Albion side which has started the new season so impressively, and his performances have been rewarded.

He was due to be out of contract at the end of the season, but will now remain at the Hawthorns until 2016 at least.

"This is great news for the club and shows we're heading in the right direction," head coach Steve Clarke said of the man who was signed from NEC Nijmegen for £800,000.

"We've had a productive summer in terms of bringing new players in but it's equally important that you hold onto your best players, and Jonas certainly fits into that category.

"He's a tough, uncompromising central defender who knows all about the Premier League and the opponents he's up against week in, week out.

"Jonas is also a very important character and leader in our dressing room.''

He follows key midfielder James Morrison who last month also put pen to paper on a new four-year contract.

West Brom sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth said: "We've been talking to Jonas about a new contract for some time and this is fantastic news.

"He is a really key player for us and this is a really important signing.

"It's also a real statement from the club about our desire to keep our best players, especially after James Morrison also recently signed a new deal.

"There was never any question on the club's side that we wanted Jonas to sign a new contract, but he had to make sure it was the right decision for him and his family, which we fully respected.''

Ashworth added: "Jonas is a terrific professional both on and off the field and we are absolutely delighted he has decided that staying here is the right move for him at this important stage of his career.''

Olsson has an ever-present record so far this season, helping West Brom to their best ever top-flight start. They also have the joint-fourth meanest defence in the division.

He has 13 caps for Sweden, who he represented at this year's European Championships.
