Ciro Ferrara: Has Garrone's backing

Sampdoria vice-president Edoardo Garrone has given his public backing to head coach Ciro Ferrara and director of sport Pasquale Sensibile.

A run of six consecutive defeats in Serie A had cast the duo's tenure into serious doubt, but Garrone insists they have the full support of the Ligurian club's board.

He told La Repubblica: "No one has any doubts over their quality. When someone asks me to confirm the coach's position, I have to repeat every time that I have never considered that our problems are down to him.

"I'm absolutely convinced that we have the right coach and the right players to get out of this situation.

"We need to get out of this bad run, but the fact that we continue to compete despite suffering so many injuries and absences shows that we have a good system in place and good people here.

"I am convinced we will find a way to start winning points again.

"When I talk about good people I am obviously referring to Sensibile. Ten days ago I told him that renewing his contract would be a formality and I've told him that again."

Ferrara was sent to the stands during the Blucerchiati's recent 3-2 defeat to Inter Milan after remonstrating excessively with the officials over an alleged offside goal, but Garrone is not prepared to let the 45-year-old use refereeing decisions as an excuse.

"I'm sure there have been certain huge errors that have gone against us, but that will happen to everyone else too," he added.

"Over the course of the championship I think the errors even themselves out, and if that's how it is, that's fine."
