Wood: Currently on loan at Millwall

Brighton manager Gus Poyet could make a move for Millwall's on-loan striker Chris Wood in the January transfer window - but Lions boss Kenny Jackett is willing to break the club's 23-year-old transfer record to buy him on a permanent basis.

Wood has played a huge part in Millwall's success so far this season, scoring eight goals in 16 appearances since joining from West Brom in September.

Poyet thinks the New Zealand international has improved since he helped the Seagulls to win League One two seasons ago.

"We had him here when he was very young and we helped each other. He helped us a lot with his power and his goals. I think we did our job as well to put him in shape, because he was still growing up," he told the Argus.

"I think he is a much better player now. He is mature, he has learnt a lot about the game in England. He is playing week in week out, so he's much better.

"There has been plenty of talk and he is a player we know very well, which would make it very easy to make a decision one way or the other.

"At the moment he is with Millwall, so I don't want to make a mess before the game just in case they take it the wrong way, so we'll see."

But Jackett will offer West Brom £1million to keep Wood at The Den come January.

Wood has played a huge part in Millwall's success so far this season, scoring eight goals in 16 appearances since joining from the Baggies in September.

"We like Chris - he has done very well for us," Jackett told the London Evening Standard.

"I think he has had two very good, experienced partners alongside him in Darius Henderson and Andy Keogh but he is a player we would definitely like to pursue once his loan expires.

"Would that be a permanent deal? Yes. We will have to see what January brings, but it is no secret that we like Chris and we would like to keep him."
