Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has stressed he "won't walk away" from the club's desperate battle for Barclays Premier League survival ahead of Tuesday night's crunch home clash with fellow strugglers Newcastle.

Lambert has the task of picking up his players after back-to-back cup exits against lower-league Bradford and Millwall in the space of 72 hours.

The Scot admits he has not experienced a run like the one currently on by Villa - two points from the last six games and the double cup blow - during his managerial career.

But he has already received the backing of club owner Randy Lerner and insists he is ready for the battles ahead.

When asked if there was any chance he would quit, Lambert said: "No. I can only do, or try to do my best. There's no chance I'd walk away from it.

"You have to fight like anything to get up. You pick yourself up and there's no point in lying down and accepting it.

"I've never had a run like this as a manager or been hit from pillar to post like this. It's an experience you take on board and you use it.

"You can't have everything going your way in your managerial career every single time. You have to take the rough with the smooth and when the rough comes you take it."

Newcastle have splashed out on several new players during January, but Lambert has only limited funds available and is still to make any signings.

He said: "At this minute there's not much really happening. There's been guys we went for who have gone to other clubs.

"How many players are we short? There's a few. But I knew the remit of it was to rebuild it. To rebuild something you have to strip it right back.

"I'm pretty sure the chairman knows exactly what he is doing. It's his money and he's the man who has put x amount of money into the club over the years.

"But if you are asking me if there will be a vast amount of money available during the rest of the transfer window, there won't be."

Lambert confirmed there was interest in full-backs Stephen Warnock and Alan Hutton, who are believed to be on the radar of West Ham and Mallorca respectively.

He said: "There are things going on at the moment on that side of it, but Stephen and Alan are here at the minute until I hear otherwise."

Fabian Delph was ruled out of the clash with Newcastle with an ankle injury, but Nathan Baker has resumed training after a recent hamstring problem and will be available.
