Disappointment at the Cottage for Samba

QPR defender Christopher Samba admits he "let the side down" in last night's west London derby defeat at Fulham but was quick to hit out at those questioning his value.

The 29-year-old arrived to much fanfare in January but at Craven Cottage he showed little of the ability that spurred Rangers to fork out a reported £12.5million.

Samba gave away the penalty from which Dimitar Berbatov opened the scoring, before losing possession under pressure to allow the Bulgarian to net his second goal.

QPR went further behind after a Clint Hill own goal and despite fighting back valiantly through Adel Taarabt and Loic Remy goals fell to a 3-2 defeat.

The result leaves Harry Redknapp's side seven points adrift of safety with just seven matches left, although Samba believes the greatest of escapes is still on.

"I'm really sorry I let the side down," he said through his Twitter account, @cs4christsamba1.

"Really upset with my 1st half performance I can't say sorry enough to all the supporters, won't give up."

A little later he added: "Before I go tonight I just wanna say I see a lot of you talk about I shouldn't say sorry, well when I'm wrong I'm wrong I hold my hands up.

"Then 2nd of all to all you keep talking about 100k performance, tell me what is a 100k performance? we as players go out and give our all.

"We do are best every week, what I get paid has nothing to do with any of you, as for my price tag I didn't put a price on my head, grow up pls."

After his move from Anzhi Makhachkala to QPR in January, Samba was reported to be picking up a weekly wage of £100,000, but the club have since said the actual sum is lower.

It was not just Samba's performance at the back last night that frustrated, with manager Redknapp irked by the defender's decision to push up in search of an equaliser after Steve Sidwell was sent off 11 minutes from time.

Talking over Samba's display, Redknapp said: "He got caught with the ball and it cost us dearly.

"When they had 10 men and we are murdering them with 11 you have got to play.

"I don't want to start lumping it into the box to Samba, [Bobby] Zamora or Remy.

"You have got to play and use that extra man. We had been creating three or four chances every 10 minutes and with 10 men we would have created even more chances.

"Suddenly he goes up front and we think we have got to start lumping it - that is not how I wanted us to finish the game, I wanted us to use the extra man and play."

Fulham manager Martin Jol also cut a frustrated figure after the match, despite his side collecting the three points.

"We lifted their spirit and that was my worry," Jol said.

"We played ever so well to be 3-0 up in a derby game. I wouldn't say we relaxed but it was nice and then we gave them the ball and I still can't understand why."
