Ola Toivonen: Expected to sign a new dea

PSV Eindhoven technical director Marcel Brands remains confident Ola Toivonen will extend his contract with the Eredivisie club.

The 27-year-old Sweden forward has been heavily linked with a January transfer, with his current deal due to expire at the end of this season.

PSV would risk losing the player for free if he stayed at the Philips Stadion and no new deal was agreed, but Brands does not think that will be the case.

He told www.telegraaf.nl: "I have no indication that he does not intend to sign. Otherwise, he would not let us wait so long. Why would he do that?"

Brands is due to hold discussions with Toivonen's agent Mino Raiola before the player links up with the Sweden squad for the two-legged World Cup qualifying play-off against Portugal later this month.

"(Talks) were agreed last week when Mino was in America," Brands said. "We need to see if we will meet or speak by phone."

He added: "That word (deadline) is not applicable. We have made the appointment, which Ola agreed would happen before he joins up with the national team."
