Terry Butcher: Considering options

Hibernian and Inverness will be hoping to find out on Friday which club Terry Butcher will be manager of when they meet in the Scottish Premiership this weekend.

Caley Thistle reluctantly granted Hibs permission to speak to the former England captain on Tuesday and he was still contemplating his future on Thursday.

The pair meet at Easter Road on Saturday and Butcher is no doubt wary of the need to make a decision before that contest.

His assistant, Maurice Malpas, took training on Thursday but Butcher was around the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium in the morning.

And Hibs assistant Jimmy Nicholl, who played with Butcher at Rangers and had the Englishman on his coaching staff when he was manager of Raith Rovers, was told earlier in the week that he would be taking the team on Saturday.

The Northern Irishman is due to host a pre-match media conference at 2pm on Friday unless further developments occur.

After taking training on Thursday morning, Malpas was in the dark over his friend's future, and consequently his own, but he was determined to focus on the game and prepare the players correctly.

"There is nothing the players can do about it," Malpas said. "They can't have any influence in it. The decision is Terry's decision. We are waiting on that.

"We have got a job to do and it's important the players do their job.

"A lot of people have been saying this and saying that. We have been trying to make sure the players are concentrating on playing against Hibs on Saturday and getting their preparation correct."

Malpas added: "It has been difficult because there has been a lot of speculation, but we are trying to keep it low key and get on with it.

"We had a good result last week after a major blip, according to a lot of people, and we just want to keep on winning."
