Jonas Gutierrez: Could be set to leave N

Norwich manager Chris Hughton is in no doubt midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has the right qualities to bolster his squad's fight for Barclays Premier League survival, but maintained a deal was not yet done to bring the Argentinian to Carrow Road.

The 30-year-old effectively took his leave of the Magpies over the weekend when he posted a series of farewell messages on his personal Twitter account suggesting that his time at the club was over.

Press Association Sport understands his future may be resolved within the next 24 hours, with suggestions the player has already travelled to Norfolk to complete the formalities of a transfer.

The midfielder was a key player for Hughton, who was in charge at St James' Park between June 2009 and December 2010, as he led the Magpies out of the Championship and back into the top flight.

Norwich are certainly in need of reinforcements as they look to pull clear of the relegation zone, with the Canaries in 15th place but only two points ahead of 18th-placed Cardiff.

While Hughton confirmed at Monday's press conference ahead of the FA Cup third-round replay at Fulham that Norwich were "hopeful" of securing the player's services, but refused to be drawn on any timescale.

"All I can tell you is there is an interest in Jonas. He is someone I know very well from my time at Newcastle, but at this moment there is nothing else to report on that," Hughton said in the press conference.

"We are hopeful something will come of that. I can't confirm he is having a medical, but I can confirm we are interested.

"If he has said his goodbyes to Newcastle that is down to him.

"He certainly wouldn't be involved at Fulham because I think under he would have had to be involved in the first game."

Hughton feels Gutierrez's Premier League experience can benefit his squad.

"He is a player of experience and he is an Argentine international who has played nearly 200 games now here in England so he brings experience and quality," the Norwich manager added.

"He has a great worth ethic and can play in predominantly two positions although he has been used right across midfield.

"He is a good individual, very much a team player, a hard worker. He is a flexible player that can operate in a few positions."

The Argentinian joined Newcastle from Real Mallorca during the summer of 2008, when he signed a five-year contract.

He has made 195 appearances for the club and scored 11 goals, although he has figured only twice this season, starting the 4-0 defeat by Manchester City on the opening weekend of the campaign and then coming on as a substitute in the 2-1 Barclays Premier League victory at Cardiff on October 5.

Gutierrez tweeted: "It was an honour and a pleasure to play with the Newcastle shirt and to have the support of the Geordie."

After receiving a deluge of replies, he added: "Thanks for the messages. I enjoy my 5 years at the club, I hope the club finish the highest this season and the best to my team mates."
