ARSENAL IN NEW LOW AS THEY PREPARE TO SELL NASRI
The Sun are reporting that joke club Arsenal have cracked in their battle to keep Samir Nasri.
According to the paper, the Gunners have now decided to 'allow' Nasri to join Manchester City so long as they pay his £22m transfer fee up front.
'High-level talks continued over the weekend and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has finally admitted defeat in his battle to keep Nasri after earlier discussions with the player last Thursday. The Arsenal board want the entire fee in one hit so Wenger can immediately strengthen his squad.'
So they don't have any money to spend if they don't sell first? What happened to that £50m warchest we heard so much about at the start of the summer?
It's understood from reading The Independent that Nasri's £85,000-a-week package with City has already been agreed.
Meanwhile, The Daily Mail is reporting that 'Barcelona will re-open talks with Arsenal today over Cesc Fabregas', while 'Stoke are favourite to sign Nicklas Bendtner after the striker admitted his Arsenal days were over'.
Perhaps Arsenal will make a paper cup out of £50 notes at the start of the season and declare that a trophy.
And how are those few remaining Arsenal players feeling ahead of the new season? Funnily enough, The Guardian reckons that all is not well in the dressing room:
'Nasri has told team-mates that he is relaxed about whether he stays or goes this summer but his conviction to leave has hardened in recent days and the situation has fuelled the feeling of unease behind the scenes at the London club.
'Some of the squad have been demoralised by the Cesc Fábregas saga.'
Only 'some'?
ARE SPURS CLOSE TO LANDING DIARRA?
In answer to the question above, all we can report at this stage is that it depends on which newspaper you happen to be reading.
According to The Daily Mail: 'Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp will look to reshape his central midfield this week by landing Real Madrid's Lassana Diarra and offloading Wilson Palacios to Stoke.'
According to The Sun: 'HARRY REDKNAPP'S bid to bring Lassana Diarra to Tottenham has hit the buffers in a row with Real Madrid over the ex-Chelsea man's £20million price tag.'
Wait and see then.
TOTTENHAM ALSO IN SAMBA TALKS
Or so says The Times:
'Negotiations with Blackburn over Samba threaten to be more problematic, but Redknapp believes that progress is being made. Tottenham have offered money in addition to a choice of several unwanted players - including Alan Hutton, David Bentley and Robbie Keane - in part exchange for the defender. Blackburn would like to take Jermain Defoe as part of the deal, but that appears less likely at present.'
Still, at least they are finally making some progress.
BARTON SET TO STAY AT TOON
Well that didn't last long. A mere week after Newcastle announced they had effectively sacked Joey Barton, the midfielder returned to full training with the rest of the Toon's first-team squad on Monday.
He's now expected to face Arsenal on Saturday - assuming, that is, Arsenal have enough players to fulfil the fixture.
However, as The Daily Telegraph points out, Barton's tweet announcing he will play against The Gunners may have broken the recently introduced club rule banning any discussion of internal matters on twitter and 'his latest rash behaviour on the social networking site may have put a peace deal in jeopardy'.
You couldn't make it up.
OBERTAN AND PAV NEXT FOR TOON?
Staying with Newcastle, it sounds as if a few players are coming in.
As reported throughout Monday, Gabriel Obertan is poised to complete his transfer to St James' from Manchester United in the next 24 hours, while The Times reckons:
'Alan Pardew, the Newcastle manager, will step up his search for a striker, having already missed out on targets such Kevin Gameiro, Gervinho and Mevlüt Erdinc. The club have been obliged to modify their transfer policy of signing predominantly young players with a sell-on value and are monitoring Roman Pavyluchenko's position at Tottenham Hotspur.'
Rumour has it in The Daily Mirror that the Toon have been told to pay £14m if they want the Russian.
