UNITED IN 'POLE POSITION' TO SIGN ZAHA
Let's start things in The Times, that most respectable of papers, for they claim that Manchester United are in 'pole position' to sign Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha.

The paper reports that United have nudged ahead of Arsenal, who were in the running for the youngster, but 'their interest is thought to have cooled given their reluctance to get into a bidding war' with United.

The Daily Mirror agrees, reporting that United will pay Palace an initial £8million, with the eventual fee rising to around £12million.

Plus, as a wee sweetener, they will loan Zaha back to Palace for the rest of the season, plus send some other (unnamed) players to them on loan to help their promotion bid.

UNITED IN FOR BAPTISTAO
Lookey here - a NEW rumour. We think.

The Sun reports that Manchester United are looking at a Brazilian youngster, who goes by the name Leo Baptistao.

Apparently Fergie sent a 'spy' (scout to you and me) to watch the Rayo Vallecano striker play at the weekend.

And he wasn't alone - apparently representatives from Liverpool, QPR, Leeds and Brighton were all there to look at the £5million-rated youngster. An interesting collection there.

CARLO 'DESPERATE' FOR ASHLEY
Interestingly, The Daily Mirror reports that Carlo Ancelotti is 'desperate' to sign Ashley Cole, wherever he might be next season.

The paper reports that Carlo has told PSG to sign the Chelsea left-back, who is out of contract at the end of the season. However, sporting director and grade-A dish Leonardo said on Wednesday that PSG weren't keen on west London's finest air-rifle marksman.

The Mirror therefore claims that Ancelotti may take over from Jose Mourinho at the end of this season, and thus could bring Cole to Real Madrid.

How very interesting.

PIRLO WANTS FRANK
In case you missed it yesterday, Andrea Pirlo would welcome Frank Lampard at Juventus.

He said: "They would be mad to let him leave Chelsea - he's still one of the best in the world.

"If he wants to play in Italy I would welcome him to Juventus with open arms.

"Lampard could have another four years at the top in Italy."

BRENDAN'S THING
Brendan Rodgers has a 'thing.' A big thing. Not that. His 'thing' is young Scousers. He says so here:

"My big thing is getting young players in here from the local area,' said Rodgers.

"Boys from Liverpool. If you look at the history here: the Carragher, the Gerrard, the McManaman, the Fowler, the Owen...

"And you name me the best two players in England in the last six or seven years? Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney, and they are Scousers. One is from that part of the city and the other from that part. So you are not telling me there are not top young talents in Liverpool.

"It is sexy to look in Spain, and I am one who loves working with European players. I love working with the talents, and all my life i have worked with players from different parts of the world.

"But we mustn't forget what is on our doorstep, and, for me, this is a hot bed for footballers who have a passion, hunger and incredible qualities. That is a massive part of my job and something we are trying to put in place."
