VILLA NEXT FOR CITY?
So farewell, Mario.

"I don't know [about a replacement], we have three strikers, we will see, we only have two days it is difficult to get the player now," said Roberto Mancini. But the Daily Mirror claim that contact has already been made with Barcelona about David Villa, with a £15m deal and a loan spell mentioned as possibilities. The presence of ex-Barca officials Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain at City is being cited as one reason why the deal may be pushed over the line.

With that in mind, it's difficult to give Arsenal's cheeky £8m bid for Villa - as reported by The Times - getting anything other than short shrift in Barcelona.

Mind you, they're backed up by the Daily Mail, who claim: 'Arsenal bosses have held summit talks at the club's Hertfordshire HQ in a bid salvage the club's fruitless January transfer window. And the Gunners are throwing all their negotiating resources at trying to land David Villa before Thursday's transfer deadline.'

BUTLAND SAYS NO TO CHELSEA
There's a consensus of opinion that Jack Butland is reluctant to join Chelsea and sit on the bench but the Daily Mail is pretty unequivocal. They say: 'Birmingham goalkeeper Jack Butland has rejected the chance to join Chelsea.

'The England international was given permission to talk to the European champions yesterday ahead of a projected £3million move but, while flattered by their interest, Butland has opted to stay at St Andrews.

'Desperate Birmingham need the cash to stay afloat but Butland had reservations about his long-term prospects and wants to play regularly if he moves.'

LAST-DITCH FOR DAMIAO
Can anybody remember a time when Tottenham weren't being linked with Leandro Damiao? The Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph both suggest that there could be a last-ditch move made this week for the £15m-rated Internacional striker. Other names in the frame are Alvaro Negredo of Sevilla and Braga's Eder.

Meanwhile, Celtic boss Neil Lennon has denied rumours of a spurs bid for Gary Hooper, saying: "There is nothing. We have had two bids in from Norwich and that's been it. It won't surprise me if another bid comes in but the answer will be the same."
