Why would Barca want Vermaelen as a replacement for Abidal? Abidal is a left back and has been replaced with Jordi Alba. Vermaelen is a centre back and, frankly, not as good as any of Barca's current back four. Sometimes I wonder if the columnists don't just make things up completely.

Erm... Why would Varane or Hummels leave Dortmund or Madrid respectively to join Arsenal?

I actually wouldn't mind letting Vermalaen go, but only as part of a swap deal. Preferably we could get Varane or Hummels from Dortmund or Madrid respectively, though 10 mil + Alex Song wouldn't be a poor shout either. The problem is that since the Cole-Gallas swap, Wenger has seemingly become complacent when it comes to maintaining the quality of the squad. That's been why we haven't won anything in so long; it's not about losing players, it's about subsequently not replacing them and letting the quality of the squad suffer as a result.
