ARSENAL IN TALKS FOR AMOREBIETA
Good news is in short supply for Gooners these days, so here's something from The Daily Mirror.

The paper reports that Arsenal are in talks with Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta, the Spanish defender who is out of contract in the summer.

The Mirror quotes his representative Gines Carvajal as saying:

"We have had some contacts with Anzhi, they were ready to make a good offer, but my client wants to play in England, so the transfer to Russia was not possible.

"We are in talks with Arsenal, he could join them in June."

CITY MOVE FOR NEYMAR
If you speak to anyone in Spain, they'll tell you that Neymar's move to Barcelona after the World Cup is more or less done, but apparently The Daily Mail have a different opinion.

According to them, Manchester City have made the first move for the curiously bequiffed Brazilian.

The paper claims: 'City's top two executives Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain are said to have held initial talks with Neymar's family and his representatives in a box at Wembley on the night of England's friendly against Brazil on February 6.'

Apparently the City men intercepted Neymar's people at the game to try and persuade them that their boy would be very happy in Manchester, rather than Catalunya.

All we'll say is don't exactly put your house on Neymar wearing blue next year.

SPURS IN FOR BENTEKE
The queue for Aston Villa powerhouse Christian Benteke grows.

The Daily Mirror reports that Spurs are the latest team to show an interest in Villa's big Belgian, and that they are 'leading the chase' for the striker.

Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City are all apparently keen, although they would probably have to double the £7million Villa paid for Benteke last summer.

The Mirror quotes Benteke's agent Erik Kismet as saying: "It is normal that if you go to a club and do well, then other clubs will show an interest.

"Christian has shown that he can play in England so why not take the step up to the next level if the opportunity is there?

"At the end of the season, interested clubs will talk to Villa, but it has to be right for Villa, the buying club and Christian.

"If all three parties are agreeable, something could happen, but right now his focus is on Villa, helping them stay in the Premier League."

PEPE STAYING AT LIVERPOOL
There has been talk about Pepe Reina replacing Victor Valdes at Barcelona, which doesn't make a great deal of sense - why would they buy a 30-year-old on the way down when they could recruit someone younger and better?

Anyway, Reina himself has dismissed such talk, telling Radio Marca: "Any talk of me joining Barca is just speculation. I've got a contract at Liverpool and I'm very happy here.

"I am sure Victor Valdes with have his reasons for deciding to leave Barcelona. I respect him. He's my teammate and friend. He'll be leaving with his head held high, as he's given his all to Barcelona."

Reina had time to chuck in a few lolz, japing about Gareth Bale: "If Real Madrid signs Bale, I'll be delighted. He causes me a lot of problems."

And finally, Reina reckons Luis Suarez will stay where he is: "I can't see Luis Suarez playing in La Liga. I think he'll stay at Liverpool. He's a great player.

"So are Bale and a few others in the Premier League."

TAP, TAP, TAP, TAP, TAP, TAP
And so it begins.

There has thus far been little suggestion that Barcelona are interested in Jack Wilshere.

Until Dani Alves opened his cakehole, anyway.

The Daily Telegraph quotes the right-back as saying:

"He is a great player who we have met playing against Arsenal and without doubt he can reach the height of the players we have here at Barcelona like Xavi and Iniesta.

"He has a lot of quality and a great personality. If I was given the chance to choose, he is a player that I would sign for Barcelona."

AND THE REST...
Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko is willing to take a pay cut to seal a £20million summer move to Borussia Dortmund...John Pemberton is the favourite to take over from Mark Robins as Coventry manager...Paolo Di Canio last night quit as Swindon boss - paving the way for a potential return to West Ham.

Padmeister - Admittedly I've not seen a great deal but I've seen him around 6 times and he's been average in all of them. To me he just seems another player with skill but not much else.
