LIVERPOOL WANT BEN ARFA
Quick line from The Daily Mirror, who report that Newcastle want to tie Hatem Ben Arfa down to a new contract.

And why the rush? Well, because Liverpool have been sniffing around, apparently.

The Mirror claims: 'Toon boss Alan Pardew has been sounded out by Kop chief Brendan Rodgers about his French star, but does not want to do business.

'Now Ben Arfa, who is coming back from a lengthy injury lay-off, is due to sort out new terms to bump up his salary and tie him down for his peak years.'

...AND ALSO A DUTCH DEFENDER
Here's one that was doing the rounds in the Sunday papers.

Both The Times and The Daily Mail claim Liverpool are looking at Feyenoord captain Stefan De Vrij.

The papers report that Brendan Rodgers was in Rotterdam at the weekend to watch De Vrij play PSV Eindhoven (with ten others, presumably), while scouts from Newcastle were there to take a look as well.

The Sundays claimed both clubs are also in for De Vrij's teammate Bruno Martins Indi.

PLENTY IN FOR WILLIAMS
We don't usually go to The Metro for the finest cuts of gossip, but it's a slow day so needs must.

The free paper reports that plenty of clubs are forming an orderly queue for Swansea skipper Ashley Williams, after he lifted the League Cup.

Apparently: 'Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham have all been linked with the highly impressive 28-year-old and if a decent offer is submitted then the Swans may be forced to sell.'

We have little more to add.

CITY TO HOLD YAYA TALKS
Yaya Toure hasn't been at his best this season, but that hasn't persuaded Manchester City from trying to tie him down to a new contract.

The Daily Star reports that City are looking to open talks with the big man about a new deal, even though his current one has a couple of years left on it.

The paper claims: 'No formal discussions have been planned with Toure, who has just returned to the Premier League after almost a month away on African Nations Cup duty. But Toure has come back fully committed to City, with the midfield maestro delighted to stay at the Etihad Stadium.

'It is understood Toure can look forward to a bumper offer of around £11m a year - £220,000 a week - if he signs a five-year deal.'

AND THE REST...
West Ham boss Sam Allardyce could move for ex-Bolton defender Ricardo Gardner who is now a free agent...Middlesbrough are close to agreeing the loan signing of Newcastle forward Sammy Ameobi...Southampton midfielder Gaston Ramirez is a target for Italian trio Inter Milan, Juventus and Fiorentina...Dagenham & Redbridge boss John Still, 62, is set to quit the League Two club and become Luton Town's new manager in a £1m deal...Fulham boss Martin Jol is considering offering an extended contract to veteran 35-year-old Greece midfielder Giorgios Karagounis...Dennis Wise is the latest name to be linked to the vacant manager's post at League One side Swindon Town.

@kernowpete .. I had to have a little chuckle at that. :)
