"Just because he doesn't have the glamour of Messi, Ronaldo...doesn't mean he's not in the same class." Now you're just being silly. Surely only a hopelessly blinkered Red could consider Rooney to be in the same class as two players who will comfortably sit in the top 10 of all time by the end of their careers? He's not even the best player in the team!

People fail to see one of the key things that Rooney possesses; the fear factor. No team leaves him space to run, pick a pass or shoot, because they know that he will hurt them. As a result, he draws players in and makes space for others. Even under pressure he still scores and creates goals. He does the leg work for other people, RVP has flourished because of that. It's pointless putting a value on him, because United would never sell him. Just because he doesn't have the glamour of Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar etc doesn't mean he's not in the same class.

@Synergy. Accepted re RVP, but I don't think Rooney is currently worth £40 mil. Maybe close to that for another English side, owing to homegrown status, but not to any other top European team. In any case I do not ever see him leaving anyway, so its a mute point. I accept the Suarez bit. Rooney always over him. Just couldn't think of any Liverpool player (regardless of knobishness !) who is as good or perhaps better than Rooney.

Also as a side note: you say Rooney isn't worth £5m more than what Andy (max potential) Carroll went for to Liverpool........the transfer market is bonkers, who is worth what anymore

@beijingisred, makes a change to be referenced and not insulted so thank you for that, upon reading your post I was waiting for the punch line... I honestly think selling a player that has so much ability in his game, who has worked under the manager for many years and HAS been consistently scoring since he arrived as a teenager for £40m that arguably won't get reinvested back into the team under a spearhead signing is foolish, he is a player that has so much to his game and selling him for £40m to maybe spend £30m on another player and hope he will be as good and instantly just seems like someone playing FIFA and getting bored with the same line up and wanting to swap one player for another, everyone thinks that if united dont sell him for £40m now that next season he will be worth £5m do they kow something I don't. To say I am a Rooney fan isn't correct as such, on the pitch yes I want him to start every game, off the pitch I couldn't care but he has shown a lot of maturity in the last year or so, with decent wingers and better holding midfielder than Carrick, R&RvP could quickly become Europe's most deadliest strike force, but until then Rooney is forced to bore holes and unlock opposition allowing RvP to finish and grab the glory. I'd rather United have Rooney than an extra £10m plus Lewandowski

"Wayne Rooney- the most overated pile of dog turd in the Premiership". This is the second time I have been left short of words, following on from the general ignorant dismissal of Ryan Giggs' career elsewhere. How Rooney can be described as anything other than consistently brilliant is beyond me. It's as if these people haven't been watching football for the last 20 years. If anyone on here can name me a player in the current top 4 who has contributed more to the league than Wayne Rooney has over the last 5 or 6 years, I'll be amazed. Lampard is the only player that comes to mind. The rest can go shovel. Tevez, Terry, Gerrard, Torres; not one has come close to matching Rooneys figures and performances over the last 5 years or more.

As an aside you may notice I said Rooney was under-rated rather than over-rated.

redgenesis, my point wasn't really to compare Roony's abilities directly with those players, merely to point out (forgive the repetition) that only half a dozen players have EVER commanded a fee of £40million. The point being that the idea of accepting £40mil for Rooney, an excellent player who is nevertheless not in the same class as the games very best, and who has no resale value, is not so stupid as to warrant those who make that argument being painted as ABU's, stupid, jealous or any of the other slightly babyish accusations that have been levelled. Also, Ronaldo, C may be the greater of the two, but he ain't the original ;)
