AVB TALKS TO VILLA
When he isn't discussing his desire to drive a car a very long way, Andre Villas-Boas has been a busy wee puppy, apparently.
The Times reports that Villas-Boas has been on the blower to David Villa, asking him if he'd fancy coming to Spurs.
The reason being not only that Villa is quite good, but that he's adaptable and Villas-Boas is mulling over a switch in formation.
The Times reports: 'Villas-Boas is considering changing to a 4-3-3 system next season and Villa can occupy either a central or wide role in the front three. Villa scored ten times in 17 league starts last season and his frustration at not starting more regularly nearly led to him joining Arsenal in January. The 31-year-old would cost about £8 million and a transfer would mark a financial change at Tottenham, who have preferred to sign younger players with sell-on value.'
They're going to sell both Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor, apparently, with more money coming in from a new kit sponsorship deal.
ARSENAL WORRY ABOUT ROONEY & HIGUAIN
The following story is from The Daily Star, so if you read any further and get annoyed, you only have yourselves to blame.
The paper reports that Arsenal are worried - worried that richer rivals will scupper their 'swoops' for Wayne Rooney and Gonzalo Higuain.
Of course, there's not much of a story in here, with the paper simply reporting that both Juventus and Spurs are in for Higuain, with Monaco, Chelsea and Paris St Germain are all keen on Rooney.
So move along Gooners, not much to see here.
NEWCASTLE BRACED FOR CABAYE BID
Line from The Guardian now, who report that Newcastle are expecting some fairly significant interest in Yohan Cabaye fairly soon.
The paper claims PSG are preparing an offer for the midfielder, with new boss Laurent Blanc a big fan.
The Guardian reports: 'With Cabaye having no "get out" clause in the five-year agreement he signed in 2011, Ashley could opt to see if PSG or Monaco are willing to pay £25m or even £30m for a player Joe Kinnear, Newcastle's new director of football, has already pledged will definitely "be staying". Yet as Andy Carroll's £35m move to Liverpool proved, every Newcastle player has his price, and PSG's Qatari owners certainly possess the funds to back Blanc.'
The money would allow Newcastle to move for targets Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, defender Kurt Zouma and Darren Bent.
UNITED CLEAR TO SIGN FOR GARAY
This is a continuing bafflement for your Gossip columnist.
The Daily Mirror reports that Manchester United are close to signing Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay, after the Portuguese club bought a replacement.
Quite why David Moyes wants another central defender, when he already has five, is unclear, and not really answered convincingly by the paper:
'Moyes wants a new centre-half, despite having a handful of options and he will be given the money to land his target, but sources in Lisbon suggest a second Premier League club is interested in Garay and may pounce once the price is set.
'Moyes is also still trying to close a deal for Leighton Baines, his left-back when he was at Everton.'
