UNITED GO BIG ON BALE
It's not often that Daily Mirror columnist Oliver Holt dips his toe in the mucky waters of transfer gossip so we're inclined to believe his claim that 'Manchester United are making a massive £60million bid for Gareth Bale' has some substance. Whether it's true that United are prepared to make that bid or that they just want fans to be distracted from the Wayne Rooney saga is another matter entirely.
Holt admits that the Rooney situation is a factor in the move, claiming: 'The Old Trafford giants are keen to put the damaging publicity surrounding the future of Wayne Rooney behind them. They know that buying Bale - who has been linked with Real Madrid throughout the off-season - would give Moyes, his players and the United supporters a huge boost'.
Holt even teases with talk of 'at least one other high-profile signing' as well as a continued pursuit of Cesc Fabregas and 'continuing speculation about a mega-bid to bring former favourite Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford from Real Madrid'.
Are United really going to spend that kind of money or are the Daily Mirror helping United with some much-needed PR?
ROONEY TO CHELSEA FOR £25M/£30M
Jose Mourinho may have said that Chelsea will not go back with another bid for Wayne Rooney but the consensus seems to be that he will get his man. The price is likely to be £25m, according to the Daily Star, though the Daily Mail suggest that Chelsea are willing to pay as much as £30m for the England striker. The initial bid has been variously priced at £20m and £22m.
The Star don't stop there, claiming that 'Manchester United have wasted no time in using the money by making an increased £28.9m bid for Cesc Fabregas'. They obviously haven't read these quotes from Arsene Wenger: "Cesc has decided to stay one more year at Barcelona. We have the clause in his contract to have the chance to buy him back so we would be on alert if that happens."
