City to make £40m move for Manuel Neuer to replace Hart, Arsenal in for Coleman, Berba could leave Fulham...
TOON MOVE FOR DOWNING
Interesting stuff in a couple of papers about the future of Stewart Downing.
Among others, The Daily Express reports that Newcastle are looking at taking Downing off Liverpool's hands, and unsurprisingly they are reasonably happy to comply.
Liverpool would only ask for £5million for the winger, apparently, but: 'As yet there has been no club-to-club contact. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wants his squad to have the strength in depth that was missing last season, but Downing has not featured in either of the club's last two friendly matches and has played just 128 minutes so far during the pre-season.'
Downing turned down a move to West Ham earlier in the summer and didn't sound keen on leaving Liverpool. An assurance that he wouldn't be playing much this season might change that, however.
RODGERS HOPEFUL ON COSTA
A quick line in that Express story suggests that Brendan Rodgers is 'hopeful' that a 'successful conclusion' to their move for the Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa, as a potential replacement for Luis Suarez, will be reached this week.
However, Costa doesn't exactly sound like he's going to force that one through.
"I'm well here, I'm happy here," he was quoted as saying by AS after returning to Madrid with Atletico from their pre-season tour to South America.
"As I've been in Argentina and Uruguay I've not heard anything about this.
"I'm happy here, if the club want me to be here, I'm going to be here.
"I think that the coach (Diego Simeone) counts on all of us, not just me. He knows how important it is to maintain the squad, the fans know it as well."
Meanwhile, The Daily Mail reckons Liverpool will let Martin Skrtel go 'for the right price.'
ROONEY BLAH BLAH
Bit of stuff about Wayne Rooney, and apparently he's not a popular man in the Manchester United dressing room.
The Independent reports that some of the big dogs at Old Trafford aren't at all happy with Rooney's behaviour, with him sniffing around for a transfer and stuff.
The paper claims: 'An impression is also being given that Rooney's relationship with some of the senior players in the United dressing room - Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra - is becoming strained, amid those players' concerns that their pleas with him to stay at United have been ignored.
'The sense of a dressing-room rift serves Rooney well in his attempts to prove that his position at the club is untenable. He can shape his own position as one in which he has fans and team-mates against him, with Ferguson, now an ogre in the player's mind, as a spectre in the background. All good grounds to leave.'
Oh come armageddon, come.
BESIKTAS TURN TO DEFOE
Quick line from The Daily Mail, who report that Besiktas are after a Spurs striker - but not the Spurs striker they were after before.
Apparently they have reached an 'impasse' in a move for Emmanuel Adebayor, so they are now looking at Jermain Defoe.
The paper insists that QPR are still realistic suitors for the Spurs man, but we have some doubts about that one, to say the least.
