LIVERPOOL BRACED FOR SUAREZ BID
If you read our live transfer blog (and if you don't, what the hell is wrong with you?) then you would have read yesterday that all the talk in Spain was that Real Madrid would move for Luis Suarez again if they sold Karim Benzema to Arsenal. The question was obviously put to Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers yesterday and his answer was obviously pretty unequivocal.
"It's very difficult at this time. We are trying to get one or two more quality players in through the door. If we (were to) lose Luis at this stage...There might have been a point a few months ago where there was time to (replace him) but with 11 days to go it would be difficult."
TALKING OF ARSENAL...
'Arsene Wenger is finally preparing to spend, spend, spend until the end of the transfer market' is the opening line of John Cross' report in the Daily Mirror. So who are Arsenal going to buy?
'Wenger has got big targets in his sights, with Real Madrid pair Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria at the top of his hit-list. Newcastle's Yohan Cabaye, Sevilla midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia and Valencia keeper Vicente Guaita are there, too,' the report continues, before admitting further down the piece that 'clearly, Arsenal are not going to buy ALL of these players'.
Benzema is described as 'a real possibility despite him being reluctant to move unless he gets told by the Spanish giants that they want him to go' while Real are apparently very willing to sell Di Maria, who might not fancy the move himself. Cabaye seems to be the most likely signing, with Arsenal expected to return with a £16m bid for the Frenchman next week. Reports elsewhere suggest that Newcastle are holding out for £20m.
DEAR CHELSEA...BACK OFF
According to the Daily Mirror, 'Manchester United supremo Ed Woodward has sent Chelsea a 'terse' letter warning them to make no new bids for Wayne Rooney' but Chelsea are set to ignore this plea and bid £40m for the striker after Monday's game. It's only ethical, you see.
So presumably that 'urgent' transfer business that saw Woodward fly home from Australia about a month ago was this letter. It's going well, isn't it?
FELLAINI WANTS OUT NOW
'Marouane Fellaini wants to quit Everton for Manchester United before his price tag gets even higher next year,' says the Daily Mail, who suggest that the Belgian is so sure that he will be amazing in the World Cup that he could end being worth an absolute fortune next summer. We're not sure about the logic but it sure sounds like somebody in the Fellaini camp is briefing the media that he wants out.
That of course depends on Manchester United offering rather more than the joint £28m bid for both Fellaini and Baines.
"Maybe it sounds a bit repetitive, but we do not want any bids and we are not inviting any bids," said Everton boss Roberto Martinez. "I have never seen Manchester United working in this manner before. When you want a player you just do the business quietly. I don't know if this is a new way of working. I don't expect a new bid. We're not in that position. There isn't an offer on the table where anyone would consider anything."
CHELSEA MOVE FOR WILLIAN
You've already read this story, right? The crux is that Roman Abramovich apparently called Anzhi's Russian oligarch owner Suleyman Kerimov and offered £32m for Willian, which is £2m more than offered by Tottenham. As Chelsea clearly don't need Willian, we can only suspect that Chelsea are a little scared of the squad that Spurs are building at Tottenham. The last time this happened, they ended up with Shaun Wright-Phillips.
