CHELSEA BACK FOR ROONEY
We love a club being on red alert.

'Chelsea are on red alert to make a second bid for Wayne Rooney after it emerged the England striker is still waiting for a new Manchester United contract offer,' says the Daily Mirror. Apparently United 'have made NO attempt to tie him down to a new deal', and you know when they use capitals that this is serious business.

Chelsea of course pursued Rooney in the summer but refused to go beyond their initial bid of £24m until Rooney made a public plea for a move, which of course never emerged. There is absolutely no suggestion that he would press for a move in January but the summer may be a different matter - much may depend on whether United qualify for next season's Champions League.

CARVALHO FOR UNITED?
Not THAT Carvalho obviously, and 'obviously no relation to former Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho' (that aside comes courtesy of the Daily Mirror's John Cross) but William Carvalho, the Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder who recently made his debut for Portugal at the age of 21.

Apparently United have had him watched in SIX consecutive games (those capitals are here again) as David Moyes attempts to solve his problems in midfield. The bad news is that Sporting will want £20m for his services.

INCE IN, LAMELA OUT
After yesterday's reports in Spain that Tottenham could loan Erik Lamela to Atletico Madrid in order to restore his confidence came British reports (on the Daily Mail website) that Tottenham could make a move for Tom Ince next month. Ince is also a target for Swansea, Newcastle and West Brom but Spurs would obviously be the bigger draw. Is he really better than Lamela though?

LIVERPOOL EYE TOIVONEN
It's fair to say that Liverpool need back-up firepower and the answer - if you believe the Daily Mirror - could be PSV man Ola Toivonen, whose name will be familiar to any Newcastle fan who followed the transfer gossip closely in the summer. The Swede is out of contract next summer and PSV are keen to pick up some kind of fee in January rather than lose him for nothing in the summer. A loan fee from Liverpool might be just the ticket.
