Presumably Manchester United fans will have some fairly mixed feelings about Nemanja Vidic's departure, but the emotions will should be more universally positive should David De Gea sign a new contract.

And The Daily Mirror reports that he is set to do just that, despite apparent interest from Barcelona.

The paper claims: 'De Gea's current contract expires in two years and United are keen to tie him down to an improved deal worth £90,000 a week.

'Barcelona have been monitoring the keeper's situation , with a view to a potential summer move for the £25million-rated Spaniard.'

They also report that Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra will follow Vidic out of the door.

Here's Arsene Wenger on Bacary Sagna, who could well leave Arsenal when his contract expires at the end of the season.

"When I say I expect, it's more that I want (him to stay). hope that in the end I am right. We are not close at the moment.

"He wants to keep his options open, because he is at the end of a contract. It is an important contract for him. He is 31 years old. I can understand.

"Because he is a defender we are ready to give him more than one year.

"I'm not alright with that (Sagna keeping his options open) because I would like him to sign just now but I have to accept it. It is his freedom - the decision belongs to him.

"We are always in negotiations with him and we try always to be fair with him. I believe his future is here and any other decision would be wrong."

Here's another manager saying a full-back could leave London at the end of the season. Jose Mourinho said of Ashley Cole:

"That's another story - that I cannot control. I like the player, I trust the player, I want him to stay. The club is happy with that, so we don't have a problem.

"But that's another part of the story that doesn't depend on us.

"He is out of the team because Cesar Azpilicueta is playing fantastically, not because Ashley is playing poorly. He has played well when he came in, but in my opinion, Azpilicueta is playing fantastically.

"You have to ask Thierry Henry about what he said. Maybe Thierry is doing the same with Red Bulls that David Beckham is doing in Miami and buying that club.

"So, yes, Ashley has got a future at Chelsea. But maybe Thierry has a better proposal."

...Says David Ginola.

Ah well. In this post-January hinterland when gossip is thin on the ground, this is what we've come to.

And if The Daily Star can hang a whole story on the dreamy Frenchman's words, we can use it for the third bit in the Gossip.

Ginola said: "Everybody wants to come and play in England.

"When he had the choice and decided to go to Monaco, I was surprised in the first place.

"I expected him to go to one of the clubs in England but he's still young and he has plenty of options in his career.

"His future could lie in Spain, Monaco or England. It's too early to decide his future now but, why not [move]? Everyone wants to play in England.

"He could play for anyone."

So he might move somewhere else, but equally he might stay exactly where he is.
