The Chompy Gossip

Liverpool make tentative Isco enquiries, Arsenal now focus on Carvalho, Spurs to move for Schneiderlin and more...

Despite more comebacks than Sinatra, it would be no surprise if this was the summer that Fernando Torres finally ended his Chelsea nightmare. And by nightmare, we mean 19 goals in 103 Premier League games despite costing £50million. Sheesh.

The Sun this morning run with the claim that Atletico Madrid are interested in bringing Torres back to where it all began so beautifully, having scored 75 times in his 174 La Liga matches before he had even turned 24 and moved to Merseyside.

The paper believe that Torres has let Atleti manager Diego Simeone know that he is keen for a return home, and with Diego Costa looking certain to leave the club this summer, Torres would soften that blow somewhat.

It's quite easy to scoff at the Daily Express' story that Real Madrid are reportedly interested in Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, partly because it contains no quotes or obvious evidence, and partly because the whole thing is just five lines long - we rather think that unless it is April 1, such a story deserves more of a sell.

In fairness, Begovic has again been in fine form this season, and AC Milan have already shown an interest in buying a keep from the Championship, so perhaps we should be shocked by nothing.

The story does at least moot a fee of £15million for the Bosnian, something that has seen off rumoured interest from Manchester City and Arsenal in the past. Seems an awful lot for a back-up goalkeeper, no matter how rich or high-profile the buyer.

We can't help feeling that Roy Hodgson would probably overlook him as well, unfortunately, but the Daily Mirror this morning run with the interesting story that Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin is ready to switch his national allegiance from France to England.

The Frenchman has been continuously overlooked by Didier Deschamps, who in fairness has had such names as Paul Pogba, Yohan Cabaye, Mattheiu Valbuena, Samir Nasri, Franck Ribery and Blaise Matuidi to call on in midfield. Having moved to England in August 2008, that means Schneiderlin can take advantage of the five-year residency rule that allows him to represent England.

Speaking on the issue, Schneiderlin failed to give much away: "Never say never. Don't give me any time limit, I'll just see.

"Of course, it's frustrating (not to play for France) but I just need to keep focused and finish as high as possible and then we'll see after the World Cup."

With Thomas Vermaelen likely to leave Arsenal this summer, and Nemanja Vidic's departure from Old Trafford already confirmed, it is clear that both Arsenal and Manchester United would both quite like a shiny new central defender this summer. If the Daily Mirror have things right, both clubs would quite like that man to be Freiburg's Matthias Ginter.

Ginter has impressed hugely in the Bundesliga this season, and at just 20 years of age is likely to go to Brazil with the World Cup squad as back-up to Per Mertesacker, having made his debut against Chile last month.

With United also showing interest, Arsenal reportedly believe that the presence of Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil in their squad may tip the balance in their favour.
