ROONEY TO PSG, ROBBEN IN
For some reason there seems to be an extraordinary amount of ballsy gossip in the papers this morning, with each trying to outdo the other for speculative suggestions. The first comes in the Daily Mail, who claim that Wayne Rooney could make a summer move to Paris St Germain. That they headline the piece 'could line-up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic' and then include a 'Best of Zlatan' video indicates just how many clicks they are hoping to garner.
They claim that with Rooney unhappy at the imminent arrival of Louis van Gaal, both club and player could be looking for a move, with PSG prepared to pay £35million for Rooney. Interestingly, the paper also include a line that Rooney is struggling to be fit for the World Cup as an aside in the story. We'd say that's the bigger and likelier story for now.
In additional United news, The Sun go with the claim that Arjen Robben could be a target for the club over the summer. If you're a) Dutch or b) play for Bayern then you will be linked this summer should Van Gaal get the gig. If you're both, well watch out.
ERM... RIO TO ARSENAL
Whilst Ryan Giggs has urged Manchester United to give professional hat flogger Rio Ferdinand a new contract at Old Trafford, the Mirror have gone with the bullish shout that the centre-back could be set for a move to... Arsenal.
No quotes or anything, just the statement that 'Wenger knows that experience at the heart of the defence is crucial.' Presumably Per Mertesacker's 96 Germany caps aren't enough. The paper do also mention QPR, LA Galaxy, Galatasaray and Besiktas, all of whom seem more likely.
If Wenger pays Rio Ferdinand around £80,000 a week at 35 years of age and 11 separate injuries in four seasons, we'll do something very silly indeed involving our undercarriage.
MOURINHO IN FOR VARANE
Because we are so bloody cultural we've got this story from Spanish paper Marca for you, and it's news that Jose Mourinho quite fancies bringing Real Madrid central defender Raphael Varane to Chelsea. We bet he does.
Varane broke into the Madrid side under Mourinho after joining from Lens in 2011. He is an assured central defender that will surely go to the World Cup, but has suffered from long-term injury this season that he has only just recovered from.
Given that Chelsea already signed Kurt Zouma in January (Varane's likely defensive partner for France over the next five to ten years) and have Tomas Kalas and Andreas Christensen as young and able deputies, it seems as if Mourinho is certainly planning for the defensive future.
