NEW DEAL FOR STERLING
You might have gained the impression over the last few days that it was only Manchester City that were allowed to announce new contracts for players this week, but according to Friday's papers, you'd be wrong.
The Daily Mirror seem to be the original claimants that Raheem Sterling will be offered a bumper new deal at Anfield, with other sources then following suit. Sterling still has three years left on his current Liverpool deal, but is earning just (just!) £30,000 a week. With the likes of Real Madrid sniffing round hopefully, it's clear that a whacking great pay rise is both needed and surely deserved.
The paper believe that the winger could be offered as much as £120,000 a week to commit his future to Liverpool. And by 'commit his future' we mean ensure that should he decide to leave for sunnier climes, Liverpool will be due the juiciest of pay days.
CHELSEA IN BENATIA TALKS
Chelsea's supposed interest in Roma's Mehdi Benatia is an odd one, as the papers seem to flitter from yay to nay on an almost daily basis. Jose Mourinho recently denied that his club had any interest in the defender, but the Daily Express today call him a big fibber.
However, they do use the slightly vague notion that 'no official bid has been made it is suggested that talks are ongoing'. That sounds like an awful lot of hogwash to us, but still.
One thing we must say: Benatia is a fabulous defender, perhaps the most underrated in Europe. If Chelsea aren't indeed interested, then Manchester United damn well should be.
REUS TO ATLETICO
We're jollying off to Spain for our final bit of bit gossip, but there is no sangria, sun and sand for this hard-working gossiper, merely a chat with Spanish media outlet Terra. Well, we've looked at their website anyway.
It claims, and very boldly too, that Atletico Madrid will sign Marco Reus this summer, a move that will make the whole of Europe stand up and applaud at such a wonderful deal. Dortmund selling to Atleti rather than Bayern, you say. Yes purlease.
Our Spanish is pretty sketchy, but we can reveal that the transfer fee would be 31 million Euros, and that Atletico have been speaking to Dortmund and Reus since the beginning of August, keeping details as secret as possible. They've certainly caught us all out.
In other news, this is one of the paragraphs in the Terra story put through Google translate. Headache-inducing stuff: 'As did years ago with the bombing of Agüero, among others leaving Bayern with honey on the lips, or more recently with Griezmann, the other contracting which closed in the blink of an eye without being lifted hare.'
