John Ryden during his playing days at Tottenham

Ryden began his career at Alloa Athletic before joining Third Division (North) Accrington in 1954, where he featured in almost all of their games before making the move to Spurs the following year.

A versatile player who could feature at wing or centre-half, Ryden had to bide his time before breaking into the Tottenham first team.

But once there he soon progressed and captained the side to a third-place finish in the top-flight in the 1957/58 season.

Ryden scored twice in 63 Division One games for Spurs and also played in five FA Cup matches before moving to Watford in 1961.

He stayed at Vicarage Road for one season before moving into non-league football, playing for Southern League club Romford and Tunbridge Wells before being named player-manager of Bexley United.

Ryden passed away at home in Kent on 16 August and is survived by wife Mary and daughters Pat, Fiona, Nell and Oonagh.

e was right to leave, but not just because of the money City were coming into. If I remember rightly he had a reasonable amount of chances to shine at City, but he never passed the bloody ball. Loads of aimless dribbles and 40 yard shots and not much else. I would say that if he had learnt to be a bit more of a team player he may have done better at City.
