The former Real Betis head coach was named Steve Clarke's successor on Thursday and agreed an 18-month deal.

And, despite speculation the 50-year-old is keen to bring in his own coaching team, Downing revealed he will stay at the Hawthorns with goalkeeping coach Dean Kiely and support the Spaniard the best way he can.

"There's been a lot of speculation with what kind of staff he's going to bring with him but we said all along from the club's point of view that me and Dean will stay and support him," he told Sky Sports after Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Southampton.

"I spoke to him yesterday (Friday) and he seems a warm man with lots of good ideas, so we're looking forward to working with him.

"We'll obviously talk over the weekend and have a chat on Monday, which will continue into Tuesday and into the Everton game next week."

Not enough

Downing saw his unbeaten league run as caretaker boss ended and he admitted Albion failed to create enough for a share of the spoils.

"We've had a decent run, obviously four undefeated and we were hopeful for today but I don't think we had enough of the ball and didn't create enough," Downing said.

"It only opened up towards the end in the last 20 minutes because we changed shape and had a go, but overall on reflection they did enough to win the game.

"I thought defensively we were really solid and restricted them to slight opportunities, but overall we didn't do enough with the ball.

"You know with Southampton when they lose it, they're quick to get it back. We made too many unforced errors."

Downing was also left disappointed when Shane Long was denied a last-gasp equaliser by Artur Boruc, adding: "It was a well-worked move, but credit to the goalkeeper, he spread himself well. I'm just disappointed we didn't snatch anything out of the game."
