Mel aims to build on point

Pepe Mel was pleased to see West Bromwich Albion take a point off Chelsea but admits that they need to start picking up wins.

The Baggies saw their winless run in the Premier League stretched to six games on Tuesday, but there were plenty of positives to take from a 1-1 draw with table-topping Chelsea.

A draw was enough to lift them back out of the relegation zone, while considerable heart will be taken from how tough they made life for a side setting their sights on title glory.

Mel is, however, still searching for his first win as West Brom boss and concedes that he needs to find a way of turning one point into three.

He told Sky Sports: "It's 1-1 again - against Everton 1-1, against Liverpool 1-1, against Chelsea. Now we need in the next game to win because next season needs to be in the Premier League.

"Now it is difficult for us. We have changed a lot of things but I don't worry because we did well today and have shown that West Brom will be better in two or three weeks."

Mel believes he could have been celebrating in midweek had it not taken the Baggies until three minutes from time to turn their second half pressure into something tangible.

He said: "I am very pleased because the players have strong work, hard work on the pitch. If we had scored a goal before, we would have won the game.

"Chelsea are a big club at the top and today, for me, it is a good day. The players performed very good. It is true, if we had scored a goal before then we would have won the game."

One concern for West Brom heading forward is the fitness of Claudio Yacob, who limped out of the action just past the hour mark, but Mel hopes he will receive positive news on that front once the influential midfielder has been assessed.

He said: "Tomorrow is an important day.

"Then 10 days isn't much. Next week we don't play, tomorrow is a day off and then we will travel to Spain to work on the pitch, tactics and work together. For me, it's pre-season next week."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

H

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
