Ameobi wants FA to look again

Shola Ameobi believes the FA needs to consider bringing in retrospective action in the wake of Callum McManaman's tackle on Massadio Haidara.

Newcastle defender Haidara is still waiting to discover the extent of his injury after being caught on the knee by McManaman's two-footed lunge in Sunday's Premier League clash at the DW Stadium.

The Wigan youngster was not disciplined by referee Mark Halsey at the time and the FA have subsequently said they are powerless to take any further action as the incident was witnessed by at least one of the match officials.

That stance has angered the Magpies, with manager director Derek Llambias claiming that the current procedures are 'not fit for purpose', with a review panel one option suggested by the Professional Footballers' Association.

Ameobi told Sky Sports: "Whatever helps the game, you have pros and cons to every argument, but I have always had an open view.

"Whatever can make the game better for all parties, for players and for the fans, I think it is only right that we address those issues."

Haidara, who only moved to St James' Park from Nancy in January, visited the club's training ground today and is set to undergo another scan next week.

Ameobi added: "It was a shock what happened. He is a young lad, who has just come over. He is in good spirits, I saw him today and hopefully he won't be out for too long.

"I wouldn't say you expect them (bad challenges), but you understand that is what happens in football at times.

"Things happen, people have a rush of blood to the head. No doubt I have done it over the years once or twice.

"We accept that is part of the game and we have to try and keep it out of the game. I think the lad knows it is a bad tackle so we just get on with it and move on."

adly this is inevitable. No club outside the top 4/5 can hang on to anyone who shows that kind of talent anymore. Might be best for them to get as much as they can now while his stock is high and start again. On the plus side lads, Grant Holt is still available.
