Coyle has been out of work since he was sacked by Bolton in October and will replace Roberto Martinez, who left to join Everton following the Latics' relegation.

Former England manager Steve McClaren is thought to have been a frontrunner for the role but chairman Dave Whelan has opted for the experience of a man who led Burnley to promotion from the Championship in 2009.

It is understood that Coyle has agreed a one-year rolling contract but stands to bank lucrative bonuses if he guides the club back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Before plotting a promotion charge, he will have to settle the futures of key players like Arouna Kone and James McCarthy, though it is thought Wigan have yet to receive any enquiries for their star men.
