Crainey, 32, is available on a free transfer after turning down a new deal to stay at Blackpool.

Former Celtic defender Crainey had established himself as a key member of the Blackpool side since arriving from Leeds in 2007 and made over 200 appearances for the Seasiders.

A number of clubs have expressed an interest in the Scotland international, but Wigan are hoping to win the race for the left-back.

Wigan boss Owen Coyle is a big fan of Crainey and sees him as an ideal replacement for Maynor Figueroa.

If Crainey agrees terms and passes his medical he is set to become Wigan's second signing of the summer following the arrival of Chris McCann from Burnley, and former Celtic defender Thomas Rogne is also expected to make the move to the DW Stadium once he completes a medical.

m a big Rafa fan, but when he substitutes Ronaldo after 60 minutes of his first game, which Real draw 1-1, I don't see the Real fans being patient. He'll be gone before October is out.
