Lambert and Holt's careers have followed similar trajectories with the strike duo spending their formative years in the lower leagues prior to experiencing top-flight football with Southampton and Norwich respectively.

Saints forward Lambert scored 15 Premier League goals in his first season in the division last year, the same haul which Holt accrued for the Canaries in his debut top-flight season 12 months earlier.

The pair have been considered on the periphery of the England squad for some time and manager Roy Hodgson's decision to award Lambert his first cap was vindicated when he came off the bench at Wembley to score the winner against Scotland.

Holt's club coach Coyle hopes Lambert has provided a reminder that a player's background should not deter international managers from opting for in-form players.

"I had it myself when I was manager at Bolton - one of the very pleasing things was Kevin Davies got his (first) England cap because he was in terrific form," said Coyle.

"There's always people looking at certain types of strikers but the bottom line is if someone is in good form, as Rickie Lambert has been, then they are deserving of a chance.

"All credit to Roy Hodgson, he gave him his opportunity and Rickie Lambert seized it with both hands and I've got no doubt there's players littered throughout the country that could go (and play for England) if they are given that opportunity.

"We've got a number here, there's no doubt about that."

ow is the time for Allardyce to finally get a chance at a big club please. He is likely to have a number of great offers for his services this summer, but who will he choose? Will it be Liverpool, Real Madrid, Dortmund or Man City?
