Coyle praises loan star Powell

Owen Coyle has tipped Nick Powell to be the next loanee he polishes into a diamond after the teenage forward opened his Wigan account in a 2-0 win over Ipswich.

Powell, 19, joined Manchester United last summer after rising to prominence at Crewe but has found first-team opportunities hard to come by at Old Trafford, so Coyle moved to bring him to Latics on transfer deadline day.

The former Bolton boss helped shape the careers of current England internationals Jack Wilshere and Daniel Sturridge in similar deals and anticipates Powell's future could follow a similar trajectory.

"I said to David (Whelan, Wigan chairman) when I was bringing him in, for me it was a win-win-win situation," said Coyle, whose side had taken the lead after 12 minutes at the DW Stadium thanks to fellow loanee Ryan Shotton's header.

"We would win out of it because we got a terrific player, Nick Powell would win because I've given him a platform to showcase his talents and Manchester United will get back a more-developed player with more experience and a player who can challenge; as we've done before with the Sturridges and the Wilsheres.

"There's no doubt from me he can have a huge career."

Powell was one of seven players who retained their place in the starting XI from Thursday's goalless Europa League draw against Zulte-Waregem, Wigan's first fixture in a major continental competition.

That night the teenager played as a lone striker due to a spate of injuries and, when Callum McManaman became the latest casualty in the second half here, Powell found himself in the unfamiliar position once more.

He would get his reward for his continued running, though, as he capitalised on an error from Town stopper Dean Gerken in stoppage time to casually clip the ball over a defender and into the corner.

The manner of the goal, Coyle felt, epitomised both Powell's natural ability and his confident demeanour.

"When I was a striker it would have been taken first time!" added Coyle.

"The lad came back on the line but you wouldn't have thought there was anybody there the way he nonchalantly dispatched it, but that's Nick.

"He's got so much belief and ability in him and hopefully I can give him more and it benefits the football club."

For Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy, it was a similar story as several chances were squandered with David McGoldrick, Daryl Murphy and Paul Anderson among those culpable of being wasteful.

"You've got to be ruthless and we weren't," said McCarthy, whose team were leapfrogged by Wigan in the Sky Bet Championship table.

"There were good saves, good blocks but I think we should have scored."

"We let them off the hook with the chances we've missed and it sounds like a broken record.

"We've got be more clinical, ruthless - whatever you want to say - we had enough opportunities.

"We've got the points we have and we are where we are because we've not completed the task that we should have done."

m only commenting on this (I don't care about Liverpool) because F365's twitter said I had call Matt Stanger a tw*t (which I don't agree with anyway) but I just wanted to be the first. Am I the first?

Trial And Error Rather Than Transition

unday, Sunday. Will there be a fan of either team, who if they are winning after 80 mins, won't still be nervous? This could be anything from 0-0 to 5-5, and no one would bat an eye.
