Rosler and Whelan share dream

New Wigan Athletic manager Uwe Rosler wants to forge a harmonious relationship with chairman Dave Whelan.

Whelan claimed it took then-Brentford boss Rosler just five minutes of an interview to persuade him he was the right fit for Latics, who were searching for a new manager since last Monday's announcement that they had parted ways with Owen Coyle.

And, speaking at his introductory press conference, Rosler spoke of his desire to get back into the top flight where he spent part of his playing career as a striker with Manchester City and Southampton.

It was an unveiling at which Whelan had not been originally scheduled to appear.

The Latics chairman, former boss Roberto Martinez and Wigan Warriors owner Ian Lenagan were all across town being honoured at a Hollywood-style 'Walk of Stars' for their sporting achievements this year as Rosler took his seat next to chief executive Jonathan Jackson.

However, barely five minutes had passed before Whelan entered the DW Stadium stage left, apologised for his tardiness and arrangements were hastily made to seat the chairman next to the duo.

It was symbolic of Whelan's dedication to both the town and the club and the type of passion which Rosler is looking to feed off.

"It's very important to have a good relationship with your chairman," he said.

"For every manager it's important you have a short line of communication, things can be done if I can convince the chairman it's the right thing to do.

"I'm looking for stability in the football club, continuity in the football club. Over time that will bring success."

Wigan's meteoric rise up the divisions under Whelan's watch is virtually unparalleled yet May's relegation to the Sky Bet Championship brought an end to their eight-year stay in the Barclays Premier League.

Plenty has changed since Whelan, a former Blackburn striker, assumed control of the Latics in 1995 yet his goal has not wavered since that day.

"We've come from the old Fourth Division, when there were 2000 people watching us playing at Springfield Park," he said.

"I bought Wigan Athletic and talking to a bunch of reporters they said 'what's your ambition?' I said 'there's only one ambition and that's the Premier League'.

"There was a little bit of laughing and muttering in the press but that was our ambition then and that's our ambition now. Uwe knows, we've spoken about it, we've just got one thing in mind.

"It may not happen this year or next year but that's our ambition, we must get back to the Premier League."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
