Rosler still eyeing promotion

Wigan's away-day blues and lack of goals must be remedied if they are to consider themselves promotion challengers, according to new boss Uwe Rosler.

Uwe Rosler: Wants more goals at Wigan

Uwe Rosler: Wants more goals at Wigan

Latics have won just once on their travels in the 12 trips which have followed their opening day victory at Barnsley, scoring a paltry three times in that period and at one point going 890 minutes without scoring on the road.

They have a chance to rectify that poor form, though, with two games at Sheffield Wednesday and Reading before Christmas and the recently-appointed Rosler, who has only taken charge of two matches, is keen to forget about what has gone before.

"For me it's important I focus on what we can do now," said Rosler.

"We scored one at Maribor where we should have had more. I think you could see already that we're improving on the offensive part.

"There's still a long way to go. When you want to win promotion or when you want to be a top team you have to score goals, goals makes the difference, and there is much more room for improvement in our offensive play. We're working on it but we have to make sure that we're not conceding too many."

Rosler was a prolific striker himself in his playing days but believes the onus should not just be on the likes of Nick Powell, Grant Holt and Marc-Antoine Fortune.

Callum McManaman scored the winner against Bolton last time out, although that was his first of the season, while the likes of James McClean, Chris McCann and Jean Beausejour are yet to register.

"The philosophy is that from all sorts of angles there has to be goals," Rosler added.

"We have to take the pressure off the strikers. The way we set up the system is such that midfielders have to take the box, have to make an impact in terms of goals by themselves or setting up goals.

"We need to have more runners in the box and the willingness to attack. That will take the pressure off the strikers, that is also very difficult for defenders to have different options to cope with.

"When you have only one or two attackers in the box it's very easy to take out, when you have four it's very difficult. So the players will work on that, we will put more emphasis on that and we will score more.

"We have the quality we just need to have this consistent willingness to attack from all sorts of angles, even the wing-backs. When we can do that I think the goals will come."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

H

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
