The visitors maintained their Sky Bet Championship play-off push with their first three points on the road since Boxing Day thanks to Berra's first-half header in a 1-0 win.

McCarthy hailed his side's response following Saturday's defeat at Middlesbrough, and singled Scotland international Berra out for special praise.

McCarthy said: "I'm very pleased after the weekend, it was a solid performance and we probably just deserved it.

"I know we got away with one at the end when they hit the post, but we haven't got away with many and they tend to nestle in the top corner when teams play against us.

"If you don't win the first balls in both boxes then you will get beaten, that's part of the Championship, and I think our lads dealt with everything well most of the time.

"If you start looking around for player of the season then Christophe [Berra] has to be up there, he's been magnificent. He's a proper centre-half.

"We'll take the three points because they were hard-earned, hard-fought and Yeovil are scrapping for their lives. You saw today that they aren't a bad side.

"We can only win our games, we can't do anything about anyone else's results, and a nice 1-0 away win is great and will make the journey home seem a lot shorter than Middlesbrough, that's for sure."

Yeovil manager Gary Johnson bemoaned a "disappointing evening" at Huish Park as his side's five-match unbeaten run came to an end.

Johnson said: "We didn't get game going. I haven't had time to see how the other teams around us did but I don't think many picked up points so we haven't lost much ground.

"It's all about small margins. We hit the post at the end but it wasn't to be. We've said to the lads that we've had a good run but we were poor today and need to be ready for big away games at QPR and Wigan.

"We finished well but we had some spells where we looked lacklustre.

"We're still there with everybody else but we need to go on another run before the end of the season."

Johnson was also impressed by the performance of Berra, adding: "Today was a day not to be up against their two strong centre-halves, you have to move and try and get in behind but I felt certainly in the first half they were dictating our two centre-forwards.

"Every manager has games in a season that aren't up to standard but it's how you do next game and how you handle defeats."

was there, it was embarrassing - the team looked totally unbalanced from the off, the defence was woeful and when Mikel came off injured it got even worse with nobody in front of them. Up front on several occasions we had opportunities and nobody would shoot - it was a complete farse! On the back of Salah's performance I'm glad there is talk of getting shot...

reat to see Tommy Rosicky getting some love. A wonderful player. Such a pity we lost so long to injury. I was so excited when we signed him, this resurgence only makes the absences seem more of a lost opportunity.
