Daniel Nardiello, in only the second game of his loan spell from Blackpool, received a straight red card early in the second half for going in hard on Terriers goalkeeper Alex Smithies, but the hosts were unable to make the most of their numerical advantage.
Hartlepool fell behind in the ninth minute when centre-back Michael Nelson turned into his own net.
Nardiello created the equaliser for Ritchie Jones who wrong-footed Smithies eight minutes before the break. But the forward then saw red and from then on it was all desperate defending for Hartlepool.
Huddersfield wasted a series of chances with Nathan Clarke heading just beyond the far post and Michael Collins being denied by keeper Arran Lee-Barrett.
Robbie Williams and Anthony Pilkington fired over the top and Keigan Parker’s shot was kept out when the ball got stuck between Lee-Barrett’s feet. In four minutes of stoppage time, Huddersfield almost snatched the winner but Parker, Andy Butler and Lionel Ainsworth all missed the target.
