Gennaro Gattuso has reportedly been involved in discussions over the possibility of replacing Rafael Benitez at Newcastle.

Doubts surround Benitez’s future with the Spanish boss out of contract at the end of the season and haggling over a new deal while seeking assurances over the Magpies intentions.

Newcastle are said to be considering alternatives in case Benitez walks away and, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, the role was discussed over dinner between agent Jorge Mendes and Gattuso.

The former Italy midfielder is currently in charge at AC Milan who are in contention for a top four spot. Reports suggest that if Milan fail to secure a Champions League place then Gattuso’s relationship with director of football Leonardo could reach breaking point.

Gattuso has two years remaining on his Milan contract but it seems he is considering contingency plans should he leave the San Siro.
