Tony Adams has heaped praise on two England players after they helped Gareth Southgate’s side beat Germany 2-0 on Tuesday.

Southgate’s side finished top of Group D to book their place in the Euro 2020 knockout stages. They drew 0-0 against Scotland, but 1-0 wins over Croatia and the Czech Republic sent them through.

This set them up with a last of 16 tie against the runners up in the so-called ‘group of death’ which contained France, Germany, Portugal and Hungary.

England critics are just cowards afraid of being wrong

Germany came second after picking up four points in Group F. The two nations faced off in the first knockout round of Euro 2020 on Tuesday.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane helped them to a 2-0 victory. This ended England’s 55-year wait for a win in a knockout tie at a major tournament against Germany.

The Three Lions are still yet to concede a goal at this summer’s tournament. The performances of Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips are a significant reason for this.

The midfield duo shone again against Germany and Adams has taken to Twitter to praise them:

“Congratulations to Kalvin and Declan who put up a fantastic wall of defence today and enabled us to keep another clean sheet,” Adams said.

“Wish I had that screen in 96.”

Sterling scored his third goal of Euro 2020 against Germany and he has been one of England’s best players at the tournament.

Rio Ferdinand has lauded the forward for “producing moments” for England:

“We said before the game this is an opportunity to become a national hero. He’s got three goals, when he needed that moment to lift us, he’s the person we looked to.

“[He’s a] fantastic kid and human, what a professional and hard worker. The courage is what I love about him.

“He has the ability to scare you. He wants to turn and face you at all times. He’ll be someone you can’t read, he jinks about his trickery, he’s producing moments, deciding games.

“When you talk about the top players in world football, I believe this kid has been there at that level in the last two years.”
