Gabby Agbonlahor thinks Steven Gerrard should attempt to bring former Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez to Aston Villa.

Gerrard will link up with Philippe Coutinho after Villa secured a loan move for the Brazilian until the end of the season earlier this week.

Villa have the option to buy the Brazil international who is now expected to travel to Birmingham to complete the formalities of his move.

Villa and Coutinho is a gamble, but it might just pay off

Barcelona confirmed Villa will pay part of Coutinho’s wages as he returns to the Premier League after four years.

He joined Barcelona from Liverpool in 2018 in a deal worth £146million but has struggled at the Nou Camp and spent 2019-20 on loan at Bayern Munich.

And former Villa striker Agbonlahor thinks the signing of former Liverpool midfielder Coutinho is a statement from the Premier League club and “will attract even more players in this window”.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: “Even when Steven Gerrard mentioned it to the chief executive, he probably thought ‘really? You can get that over the line?’

“Gerrard is probably like ‘yeah, he’s my mate. Give me one second and I’ll give him a call’. He will have that effect on players he even hasn’t played with as he’s Steven Gerrard.

“Players are going to want to play for Steven Gerrard the player, never mind Steven Gerrard the manager who has done so well in a short space of time.

“Getting Coutinho in now will attract even more players in this window.”

One player Agbonlahor is hoping to see in a Villa shirt soon is Atletico Madrid striker Suarez, who also has connections with Gerrard.

The Uruguayan striker scored 82 goals in 133 appearances for Liverpool, before securing a move to Barcelona in 2014.

Agbonlahor added: “Honestly, when I first saw it I thought ‘nah’. Then I thought ‘yeah, this is Steven Gerrard’.

“This is no Mickey Mouse ex-footballer, this is Steven Gerrard. One of England and Liverpool’s greatest ever players.

“He is going to have the most amazing relationship with the likes of Coutinho. Go and get Suarez next! Us Villa fans we aren’t stopping.”
