Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars has dismissed the chances of Tottenham target Frenkie de Jong in January.

De Jong made his breakthrough in the Ajax first team in the 2016/17 season, before establishing himself further in 2017/18.

The midfielder has since made his international debut for the Netherlands, and has started nine of Ajax’s ten games this season.

His performances have earned admiring glances from Europe’s elite clubs, with Barcelona and Tottenham reported to be lining up moves.

It was reported earlier this week that Tottenham were considering bidding for the 21-year-old in January, with the Dutchman one of two main targets for the north London club.

But sporting director Overmars ruled out the prospect of him leaving in the winter when asked of Barcelona’s interest.

“Barcelona can return in January if they want, but no player will leave,” he told AS.
