Ancelotti bemoans ‘subjective’ VAR call as Everton boss sees red

Carlo Ancelotti claims Everton’s last minute goal should not have been chalked off as his side drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Toffees thought they had snatched all three points in second-half stoppage time as David De Gea was beaten by Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s deflected shot.

But VAR ruled that midfielder Sigurdsson – who was lying in front of De Gea in his box – interfered with the goalkeeper’s line of sight and the goal was ruled out.

Ancelotti told Match of the Day: “The decision was difficult. From our side we say Gylfi [Sigurdsson] didn’t affect the vision of the goalkeeper and they decided differently. Sometimes it is right sometimes it is wrong. But the performance gives us more confidence that we can compete with these teams.

“I don’t think [David de Gea’s view was obstructed]. His vision was clear, but the ball moved past really close to [Sigurdsson] – it’s really difficult, it is not an objective decision, it is subjective.”

Ancelotti was shown a red card after the final whistle for remonstrating with the referee on the pitch.

He added: “When I saw the red card it was a disappointment. I asked for an explanation and afterwards I had a conversation with him – I want to keep that private.”
