Arsenal boss Arteta makes Man City defender ‘shock target’

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta wants to bring in Manchester City defender John Stones, according to reports.

The England international has only started 9 of the Citizens’ 22 Premier League matches this season, while he has made one start in the FA Cup and a single substitute appearance in both the League Cup and Champions League.

After starting off with high hopes for Stones at City, there is a feeling that Guardiola may have lost faith in the 25-year-old and a move away could be on the cards.

Arteta is looking to reinforce his Arsenal defence in January with the Gunners conceding 31 goals in 22 Premier League matches this term.

And The Sun claims Stones ‘is a shock target’ for Arsenal and the City defender ‘would be keen to discuss a move — even if it is on loan.’

The Barnsley-born centre-back is worried about his place in the England squad for Euro 2020 and is eager to play more matches to put himself into Gareth Southgate’s thoughts ahead of the tournament.

Stones has two years left on his current deal at the Etihad Stadium and there has been no hint of a new contract heading his way.

A source told The Sun: “He was in London to see his agent last week and is due back again this week.

“He knows if he is to resurrect his England career he has to get more time on the pitch.

“Arteta is in need of defenders so it could be perfect for both of them.”
