Arsenal fight Man United for Atleti defender – report

Arsenal are hoping to fend off interest from Manchester United to sign Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez, according to reports.

In The Sun, Mike McGrath has an exclusive on the story, claiming that Arsenal would like another central defender with Gabriel Paulista unfancied and Per Mertesacker ageing. Aren’t we all, fella?

McGrath writes that Gimenez is keen on a move to the Emirates, and that Arsene Wenger is considering him as the solution to their centre-back need. If Mertesacker and Gabriel go then Rob Holding will be the only back-up.

Gimenez is touted by The Sun as a £54m-rated defender, but that’s actually just his release clause on a contract that expires in 20 months.

With Diego Godin and Stefan Savic restricting Gimenez to 36 minutes of league action before his recent injury, it’s hardly likely that Arsenal would pay anywhere close to that fee.

The Sun also mention that Jose Mourinho is interested in bringing Gimenez to Manchester United, which is something that has been reported for a while.

However, United have also been linked to about 427 other central defenders so, y’know.
