Arsenal-linked Georginio Wijnaldum gives a thumbs up

Sky Sports News reporter Kaveh Solhekol has revealed that Georginio Wijnaldum was an Arsenal fan growing up and that they are a club “close to his heart” amid reported interest in the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder.

Wijnaldum – who is reportedly ‘not interested’ in a move back to Newcastle United – has been linked with the Gunners since the transfer window reopened earlier this month.

The Netherlands internatonal played just short of 250 times for Liverpool, winning the Champions League and Premier League during his time at Anfield.

Wijnaldum left the Reds in the summer to pursue a new challenge, joining PSG on a free transfer after his contract at Liverpool expired.

With the midfielder reportedly unsettled in Paris, reports coming out of Spain recently claimed that Arsenal have “accelerated” their interest in Wijnaldum with the Dutchman top of Mikel Arteta’s wishlist.

And now Sky Sports News reporter Solhekol claims that Wijnaldum is open to the idea of moving to Arsenal as he was a big fan of the Premier League club growing up.

Solhekol said: “I’ve been told Arsenal are one of his favourite clubs. Somebody quite close to me said that when he was growing up that he was an Arsenal supporter.

“So I think that he would be more than happy to play for Arsenal one day. I’m not going to say it’s going to happen this month. I’m not going to say it’s going to happen in the summer.

“But they are definitely, I’ve been told, a club that are close to his heart.”

Meanwhile, former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has urged Wijnaldum to return to the Premier League as it could be “good for him”.

“You have no idea how much talk there is in France in the last two months surrounding Georginio Wijnaldum,” Petit told

“When he scored two goals against RB Salzburg in the Champions League last November, I was at the stadium that night and I thought it could be the perfect game for him to properly start his season with Paris Saint-Germain.

“But he is struggling and he is quite isolated in the PSG dressing room. He doesn’t have the relationship with his teammates that he had when he was with Liverpool.

“He seems to be missing that kind of affection, and the competition is very high at PSG. We all know the quality that Wijnaldum possesses, he was a top player at Liverpool, so maybe a return to the Premier League could be something good for him.”
