Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire will form “an excellent duo” at Manchester United in 2021/22, according to Arsenal legend Robert Pires.
Man United have been busy in the transfer market this summer. Firstly they secured the services of long-term target Jadon Sancho for a fee of around £73m.
It was reported last week that the Red Devils had “reached an agreement” with Real Madrid for the signing of Varane for £42m. His contract at Madrid was set to expire at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.
The 28-year-old joined Real Madrid in 2011 from French outfit Lens. He has been an ever-present for the Spanish giants over the past ten seasons. He has played 360 times for them.
Varane is a three-time winner of La Liga with Madrid. He has also won the Champions League on four separate occasions.
The defender has also shown for his country, as he helped France win the World Cup in 2018.
Pires – who was part of the Arsenal invincible team in 2003/04 – has had his say on his compatriot’s move to Man United (as cited by The Metro). He believes that Varane will form a great partnership with Maguire:
“Yes Raphael will certainly adapt to English football.
“Surely there will be matches in which he will suffer physical clashes, but he is now a player of great experience.
“I see him well paired with Maguire, they will form an excellent duo.”
Speaking after the signing was agreed, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted that Varane is a “proven winner”:
“Of course, very happy that we’ve managed to get a deal with Real Madrid.
“Medical should hopefully be OK. He’s a proven winner, a player we’ve followed for many years.
“First of all the club shows ambition with one of the most exciting young players in world football, then one of the most respected centre-backs.
“We have different ways of playing with Raphael. I can’t wait to get him in, hopefully we can get that sorted as soon as.
“We’ve scrambled before towards the end of the window and now I have to say we’re in a good position.”
