Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos could reportedly make a January switch to Italian side Genoa.

The Greek international has fallen out of favour at the Emirates in recent seasons.

He hasn’t featured under Mikel Arteta this campaign after being omitted from the Premier League and Europa League squads.

His search for game time means he could now join Genoa, according to reports in Italy (via the Daily Mail).

Sokratis’ contract is set to expire in June, meaning Genoa can pay a reduced fee to sign him this month.

He will be available for free in the summer if the Serie A outfit decides against that option.

The report states that Sokratis is ‘keen’ on a January move to resurrect his career.

He hasn’t featured in the Premier League since the 1-0 victory over West Ham back in March.

Fenerbahce have also been linked with a move, but it seems the 32-year-old would prefer to join Genoa.

He played for them between 2008 and 2010, making 59 appearances in all competitions.

Sokratis went on to join Werder Bremen and then Borussia Dortmund in July 2013.

Arsenal signed the centre back for £14.5 million in 2018, but he hasn’t had the desired impact.

Arteta prefers to play the likes of Rob Holding and David Luiz. Pablo Mari is also available to the Spaniard after making his loan deal permanent in the summer.

Gunners chiefs are in the process of transforming their defensive options, with Sokratis one of multiple players set to lose out.

They’re prioritising younger players, shown by the signing of Omar Rekik yesterday.

Fellow young defender William Saliba has made a loan switch to Nice, however, after failing to make his Arsenal debut.
